What is the importance of teaching literature in Primary education?

What is the importance of teaching literature in Primary education? Literacy is a worldly skill allowing us to read, write, communicate and listen effectively to help us understand things which are complex (National Literacy Trust, 2017).   Literacy is a skill which is needed for almost everything, lacking this skill will put one at a disadvantage and would be extremely difficult for one to go to school, find a good job therefore social mobility and even tough for one on a day to day basis (National Literacy Trust, 2017). Literacy is one of the core subjects and is being tested by many including one of the tests for the PISA score and the UK has low scores for literacy Wales having the lowest in the UK (Hume, 2016). Wales new curriculum has been based a lot on improving these scores. Donaldson has created this curriculum so that the key skills and subjects such as literacy and numeracy are the main focus and can be developed in every aspect of the curriculum and every lesso...

What can be done to improve attitudes towards maths?

Image
What can be done to improve attitudes towards maths? There is a stigma around Mathematics and as children get older they tend to lose interest in the subject, females in particular (Anon, 2008, p.9). Parents play a big part in their children’s attitudes as some parents may stereo type and influence their children into what subjects, roles and paths that they should pursue (Anon, 2008, p.9) and socialisation from the home is the primary form so they will imitate their parents, see them as role models and have the same beliefs and adapt the same way of thinking as their parents Baumeister (1986) notes that family socialisation gives a child an identity, when a child is young they are easily influenced, therefore primary socialisation is the most effective to them. Math anxiety is also something that people are unaware of which also needs to be helped in order to change attitudes towards maths. Kirkland experienced Math anxiety with one of her students and she found that it was a ...

Can teachers be replaced by technology in the future?

Image
Due to the fast pace development of technology, many jobs are becoming redundant and there is a question of whether technology can educate children instead of teachers and replace them? Henny argued that ‘some educators are worried that there will be no students to teach in the future as technology might take over a lot of tasks and abilities that teachers have been teaching students for decades’ (Henny, 2016, p.1). Although technology is advanced and teaching is known whereas technology is uncertain (John, 2007) and there are some skills that only a teacher can obtain and convey effectively to the children for example Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal development and assistance of a more knowledgeable other (Vygotsky 1935/1978) , this approach is possible with technology but with face to face interaction this approach would be better received as Vygotsky found that, ‘’It was believed that through social interaction with more knowledgeable others that children were able to acquire knowle...

E Safety

Image
E-safety is an umbrella term but essentially about staying safe on the internet/online and the skills that come with this ability. This has become of huge importance due to the development of technology and the dangers that can come with them through online, smartphones, computers and social media (Hellard and Hopping, 2018), there is a particular danger for young people as its been reported that, ‘over half of young people (59%) report that they use social network sites’ (Wespieser, 2015, p.19) and being able to use social network confidently and being digitally competent are two different understandings, being able to be digitally competent is the skill you need which enables you to be confident and safe online (Welsh Government, 2016,p.2). Donaldson voiced the fact teachers must educate children on how to safely use technology (2015, p. 15) this has become a very widely spoken subject matter as Wespieser found that many children have made friends with people they don’t know thro...

What are the benefits of storytelling in primary education?

Image
What are the benefits of storytelling in primary education? Story telling is a way of helping a child develop holistically as it helps to engage with their imagination taking them to a fantasy world where they can escape to and be creative, bringing to life whatever they desire as it enhances their willingness to express themselves and put their thoughts and feelings forward, keeping an open mind and promoting free thinking (Shah, 2017). Communication is a large factor in storytelling, as stories can be interpreted in different ways and you can be in sync with the person telling the story allowing your brain to be fully engaged in the image and take you into the story tellers mind this is the power of storytelling as you are fully engaged into the story and try to be two steps ahead by trying to predict what will happen next, this shows how strongly the brain engages through communication and listening, it awakens all senses as you put yourself into the story (Morgan, 2015). As ...

What do you think should be the purposes and priorities for the new curriculum?

Image
What do you think should be the purposes and priorities for the new curriculum? According to (Jenkins and Shipman 1976:26) ‘ A curriculum is the formation and implementation of an educational proposal to be taught and learned within the school or other institution and for which that institution accepts responsibility at three levels: its rationale, its actual implementation and its effects.’ (Bartlett and Burton, 2015) I believe that Personal growth is a priority for the new curriculum and has a large impact on a student if given correctly at a young age. The importance of personal growth should be taught at a young age or even subconsciously by teachers about how developing oneself, having an open mindset and being able to branch out into unfamiliar environments is important as it is one of the key factors along with learning skills, gaining knowledge and having a sense of citizenship. These factors are all holistic because if the child grows as person then the child is able to...
